Festivals in Hamilton & Niagara
Steel-city street art, Canada’s biggest free music weekend, world-class theatre and Ontario’s entire wine country — all packed into one region. From Supercrawl to the Shaw Festival to a glass of icewine, here’s how to find your weekend.
The region at a glance
Few parts of Ontario cram this much variety into such a short drive. Hamilton has reinvented itself as an arts city — its James Street North corridor hosts Supercrawl, one of the country’s largest free street festivals, every September. Just up the QEW, Burlington throws the Sound of Music Festival, a free waterfront music weekend that draws hundreds of thousands, then packs the lakeshore again for one of Ontario’s biggest ribfests.
Cross into the Niagara Region and the character shifts to wine, theatre and spectacle. Niagara-on-the-Lake is home to the internationally acclaimed Shaw Festival, St. Catharines and Twenty Valley run the Grape & Wine and Icewine festivals, and Niagara Falls glows through the winter with the Festival of Lights. It’s a region you can visit in every season and still find something on.
