Festivals in the Greater Toronto Area
Canada’s biggest festival scene, all within reach of Union Station. From Caribana and the CNE to multicultural street parties across Mississauga, Brampton, Markham and beyond — here’s how to find your next weekend in the GTA.
The GTA at a glance
The Greater Toronto Area packs more festivals into more weekends than anywhere else in the country. Toronto anchors it with globally-known events — Caribana turns the lakeshore into a moving carnival, TIFF brings the film world to King Street each September, and the CNE closes out summer on the Exhibition grounds. But the GTA is far bigger than downtown. Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Vaughan, Oakville and Durham Region each run their own calendars, heavy on multicultural celebrations, waterfront events, ribfests and fall fairs.
Because everything is stitched together by the TTC, GO Transit and the UP Express, you can base yourself almost anywhere in the region and still reach a festival most weekends from late spring through early fall — then keep going into the holiday-market season through December.
Festivals by type
Whatever you’re into, the GTA has a version of it. Here are the six threads that run through the region’s calendar.
Music & Nightlife
Big-stage and street-level both. VELD, the Toronto Jazz Festival, Beaches International Jazz and outdoor summer concert series across the region.
Food & Drink
Night markets, food-truck rallies and neighbourhood tastings. Look for summer street eats along the Danforth, Little Italy and Mississauga’s waterfront.
Multicultural & Heritage
The region’s signature strength. Caribana, Carassauga, Taste of Asia in Markham and dozens of cultural street festivals every summer.
Film, Arts & Culture
TIFF, Hot Docs, the all-night Nuit Blanche and the Luminato arts festival make Toronto a genuine culture capital.
Family & Seasonal
The CNE, holiday markets, Cavalcade of Lights, and fall fairs out in Halton, York and Durham that are built for kids.
Pride & Community
Toronto Pride is one of the largest in the world, and community and neighbourhood festivals fill weekends across all seasons.

Spring (Apr–May)
The calendar wakes up — Hot Docs, Doors Open Toronto and the first outdoor markets and cultural festivals of the year.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Peak season. Pride, Jazz, Caribana, VELD, waterfront festivals and the CNE — the busiest and most crowded stretch by far.
Fall (Sep–Oct)
TIFF takes over September, Nuit Blanche lights up the streets overnight, and fall fairs run across the outer GTA.
Winter (Nov–Dec)
Holiday markets, the Toronto Christmas Market and Cavalcade of Lights carry the season through to the new year.
Signature GTA festivals
If you only catch a handful, start with these — the events that define the region’s calendar.
Toronto Caribbean Carnival (Caribana)
North America’s largest Caribbean festival, built around a massive costumed Grand Parade along the lakeshore, plus soca, calypso and island food across several weeks of programming.
Canadian National Exhibition (The CNE)
The 18-day fair that ends every Toronto summer — midway rides, the air show, food building and grandstand acts at Exhibition Place.
Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)
One of the world’s premier film festivals, filling the downtown core with premieres, red carpets and public screenings for eleven days each September.
Nuit Blanche Toronto
A free, all-night contemporary art event that transforms streets, buildings and public spaces across the city from dusk to dawn.
